Lava

I am not a Pinterest momma.  I get on there “maybe” once a month, “pin” a few things, and nothing ever becomes of anything I do.  I seriously don’t understand how people have time to browse on there for hours a day.  No, I do not have a “real job”, but if I ever try to get on the computer while my children are awake stuff happens.  You know blood, crying, climbing, China cabinets, assaulting the dog, etc.  You get what I’m saying!!  However, ever since I got the stomach bug I haven’t been able to sleep well.  It’s driving me to near insanity.  Last night I decided to see what was new in the world of pinning boards.  I came across easy craft ideas to do with kids.  Then I saw something about making lava.  That just screamed “FORD LAMAR!!!!”

I had all the necessary stuff for the experiment except Alka Seltzer.  Naturally, I had to go to Wal-Mart today so I went straight to the medicine section.  I will just throw this out there… I had no idea what Alka Seltzer was other than tablets that dissolved.  I didn't know what purpose they served in the medication world.  However, I found them and went cheap with the Wal-Mart brand.
I was super pumped about my science experiment with Ford.  After I got John Brantley to sleep I set up for the lava investigation.  I thought Ford would be ALL about it.  He was mad.  He wanted to make a volcano too.  I tried to explain we were just doing lava.  Still mad.  Once we got going he lightened up a bit!!!!
First we filled out bottle ¾ full of vegetable oil.
 Next we added water.
Then 10 drops of red food coloring.  I think he got drop happy.  I see more than 10.
And the last step was to cut an Alka Seltzer tablet into 8 pieces.  I honestly don’t think that matters… we ended up putting 4 tablets total in the experiment.
Ford got into the red food coloring a bit.  Can you tell????
He was so excited when the “lava” started to bubble and rise up.  He put so many Alka Seltzer tablets in the bottle that I thought it might blow up.
After a few minutes it all settled back down.
I have expressed my love for the Dollar Tree before.  Well, it’s still there and going strong.  I stopped by there today too.  I had to pick up a few things which included popsicle sticks.  Not only did I find regular brown ones, but they had colored ones too.  I was like a kid at Christmas.  Ford and I played art class after science class.  He built a swimming pool.  Do you see it???  I don’t have an eye for art, so I am having a hard time making out the pool.
And I made a box!  (the glue dried clear)
We can’t forget about Bitty.  He eventually woke up.  He won’t sit still for long, but he has a BIG TIME favorite book.  See Exhibit A.
He has recently come to love one of Ford’s old fave’s…. See Exhibit B.
I am “that momma”.   Y’all are all thinking…. Oh no, what is she going to say now.  It’s really not that bad, but to some of you it could be.  I might get some eye rolling going on.  To my defense, before I begin, I am an educator.  It’s in my blood.  I have been trained this way and I CAN’T HELP IT!!!  I am a FIRM believer that the parents are the child’s first teacher.  Enough said…. See below…
Ok, I’ll explain.  I want Ford to know his sight words.  We have been working on a few new words here and there when he is in the tub.  It’s not just me; he WANTS to learn and asks for more words.  He can successfully read this list to me every night.

I put this note in his lunchbox today for a surprise at snack time.  Yes, I sewed the material on the top of that note-card!!!
And then there’s Bitty.  At almost 21 months of age he is still eating on top of the table!!!
Until next time….
